Summer Travels with Your Library!
June 21st marks the first official day of Summer, and Summer means road trips! Wherever you go, remember to take the library with you!
*Ebooks and audiobooks from our digital collection are ideal for summer road trips. What better opportunity to get your kids interested in the books you loved growing up than listening as a family on a long car ride together? Classics such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Anne of Green Gables are available to download on OverDrive. If you’re travelling alone or with other adults, authors David Sedaris, Bill Bryson, and Jenny Lawson write bite-sized, humorous tales that won’t require you to remember a lot of plot or detail from one to the next, making them perfect for those hours in the car when you might be distracted from your book by things like driving or reaching your destination. The great thing about having these available digitally is that you can take them with you when you leave the car, and listen to them in hotel rooms, standing in line for rides or museums, or travelling from one attraction to another. You almost never have to stop reading!
*Flipster Magazines is another library resource that’s great for travel. Imagine, sitting on the beach, reading the latest Health, People, Southern Living, or Sports Illustrated. Older issues are also available. An unlimited number of Flipster magazines can be downloaded for free with your library card via the Flipster app on your device, or viewed at our website.
*Travel books are a great way to prepare for your vacation! Our collection includes traditional guides, such as Fodor’s and Frommer’s, for destinations all over the world. There are also multiple books of tips and tricks written by seasoned travellers. Not comfortable bringing a library book on vacation? Try an ebook! Ebook travel guides are perfect for travellers who don’t want to carry a lot of extra baggage, or who don’t want to be spotted as tourists.
*Don’t forget to sign up for the Summer reading program before leaving for your trip! This year, we have introduced a “points” system. Downloading an ebook or audiobook, reading a magazine on Flipster, and exploring a library database are all ways to earn points! Reading books is still part of the program, but now you can even get points for visiting parks and museums! The program is open to all ages, and you only have to earn ten points to be entered into the raffle for a Kindle Fire, iPad, or bike, depending on your age group!
*Can’t make a trip just now? Enjoy travel videos from the comfort of your own home. Access Video has 546 free streaming videos in the “travel and recreation” category, including Ken Burns’ epic exploration and history of America’s National Parks, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. “Visit” Yellowstone National Park with explorers Terri and Todd, travel by train to Brazil, or swim through a tropical reef in Australia, all from the comfort of your living room! Just have your library card ready, and you're all set!
